When life doesn’t turn out as planned, some, like Yasper, displace the blame onto others, particularly onto those who succeeded in the exact manner they envisioned for themselves. While nearly every suspect revealed themselves to be unhappy with how their lives turned out compared to how they envisioned it in high school, none of them felt as let down about their failed dreams as Yasper. The Afterparty season 1’s premise of high school revenge is no accident, as the ending to Christopher Miller and Phil Lord's show brings together some of the most common themes that occur when people are confronted with their past and–in Yasper’s case–thwarted ambition. Being reminded even further about how Xavier became a star and his own career failed, Yasper’s bitterness manifested into the need for revenge, which culminated in killing Xavier and stealing one of his songs. When Yasper asks Xavier to bless his track after seeing he “ stole” his line “ how great is this party,” Xavier quickly rejects him and reminds Yasper that he was the one who dumped him for a solo career. Yasper’s resentment of Xavier was shown in The Afterparty’s ending when he claimed that he gave Xavier his stage name by telling him to use his middle name instead of “Eugene,” and that he believes himself responsible for Xavier’s success. After Yasper broke up his band with Xavier in high school because he thought pop was a fad, Xavier went on to have an undeniably successful music career, while actor Ben Schwartz's character became an A/V specialist who never fulfilled his musical dreams.

What did you think of the Apple TV+ series The Afterparty season 1, episode 5? Comment below. While Yasper’s story in The Afterparty episode 3 made him an unlikely suspect when he explained he needed Xavier alive to complete their music collaboration, the finale reveals this to be a clever lie. When it gets stated that Zoe doesn’t have a grudge against Xavier, she responds with, “well, I didn’t at the start of the night”. With speculation about who the killer could be, Zoe diverts attention away from Aniq and throws herself into the ring. However, it’s soon proven to be discarded lyrics written by Xavier. To prove who the killer is, Aniq reveals the note that he found. But for Aniq, as Xavier decides to press charges, he gets arrested and, therefore, loses his scholarship.īack to Xavier’s living room and everyone argues over who could have murdered him. The police release Xavier due to his father. Guests film Xavier and Aniq’s “fight” until the police arrive. So, Aniq grabs a bat and smashes up Xavier’s car. Xavier takes huge delight in informing Aniq that Brett and Zoe are hooking up. The mixed CD falls out of the bin and into Brett’s hand, and as a result, he takes credit for making it.

Xavier does nothing to correct them, and he continues with the lead throughout the night. When Xavier leaves the bedroom, the other guests falsely believe that Xavier has had sex with Chelsea and some random dude (Walt). (Little do they know that Walt was in the bathroom and heard all). Although, when she turns him down, he accuses her of leading him on. With both Xavier and Chelsea drunk, Xavier makes a move on her in one of the bedrooms. Aniq spots Zoe and Brett together, and so he throws the mixed CD in the bin. Zoe and Brett then continue to bond, whilst Chelsea continues to drink heavily. It humiliates him and causes the mixed CD to become damaged. In return, Xavier pulls Aniq’s pants down and pushes him into the pool. When Xavier arrives at the party and he shows off his bleached hair, Yasper uses it as a way to break up the band whilst also managing to blame Aniq for it. Zoe even provides Chelsea with her first drink, likely starting her off into a path of alcoholism, whilst Brett worms his way into the conversation. Party Time! As the party starts (and no one still has a clue who Walt is), Zoe bitches about the two Jennifers to Chelsea. After Aniq flirts with Zoe in the science lab, he decides to make Zoe a mixed CD. Although, he tries to impress everyone with his new car. As news of the party spreads at school, Yasper tells Aniq that he wants to leave the band as Xavier is too “pop” for him. The flashback begins! With Walt’s parents away, he decides to host a huge party. Whilst no one has any idea who Walt is, even mistaking him for a butler, he wants to tell everyone the story of the infamous party. No one wants to discuss it, that is, except for Walt. With all the main players in the living room, Detective Danner asks the guests about the heavily referenced St Patricks party. As Aniq continues to hide, much to Detective Danner’s annoyance, her boss calls and presses her for the report of Xavier’s death.
