But regardless I like the locations and story beats in this episode much more than the last. I suspected it was a R&M brain parasite situation for a moment. I'm not a big fan of when fiction does this. The narrative introduces a new character that everyone already knows in-universe. The chapters have clear separation of ideas, each adding something new and keeping the gameplay fresh, even if it does reuse a couple of core concepts from the base game. The game picks up right where episode 1 left off. Even if I question the usefulness of this type of game expansion. Fortunately, I think episode 2 has much better content over episode 1. The focus that Half-Life 2 had on physics puzzles and it's brand of level design and set pieces starts to get old after this much game. I wonder if all the content from episodes one and two should have been packages in a new game or format. You'll have to play the disappointing Episode One beforehand but this game makes it very much worth it.Įpisode two sits in the same place episode one does, an extension to an already good game with with waning justification for all the repeated ideas. Episode Two made fighting Striders fun, something the main game couldn't even do.ĭefinitely play this one. Episode One's Strider fight was fucking dreadful and left me feeling cheated several times. That Strider section at the end of the game is something I wanna highlight, because it was probably my favorite part of the game. The defense against the Antlions section was pretty awesome though so it made up for it. The new Acid Antlions are pretty annoying and shave off like half of your health in one hit. I'd say the only portion holding this back is how long the Antlion Mines section takes. Encounters are memorable because of this variety and how well spaced out it all is. You start out fighting Antlions, then fight Zombies, then fight both, then fight Zombies again, then fight the Combine.

The enemy variety in general in this game is stellar. The Acid Antlions aren't as good of a enemy, but they don't return later in the game so they're alright. They are terrifyingly introduced and are a foe to be reckoned with in battle. The Hunters are an incredible new enemy and are so much fun to fight. Hell, even the vehicle sections were better than anything others in the franchise up until now. The Vortigaunts are probably my favorite characters in the franchise now besides Alyx and the G-Man. There were so many rapidly changing set pieces, new and exciting enemies to fight and much more NPCs aside from the admittedly great companionship of Alyx.

I can't recall if it was like that in the main game but I digress. Valve fixed an issue I didn't even know I hated.

I never realized how horrible the flashlight was in Episode One until now. Rarely did it seem like the plot was meandering nor did anything feel pointless. Wow, this was a massive improvement from Episode One.
